Part number for 1985 280SL Euro
I need a new AC tensioner pulley with bracket for my 1985 280SL Euro that has the 110 engine. Does anyone happen to have the part number(s)
for this part? Thanks, Desert |

You should be able to get it here: The M-B Electronic Parts Catalog:
EPC-net Online It's such a valuable asset/tool that I'm just posting the link, so you can get set up for yourself. It's free, and they need a U.S. based credit card to verify residency, but won't charge anything. It will only work on a Windows computer, though. Play around a little, and you will be surprised at how much info you suddenly have. Good luck, Scott

Thanks, I did locate one through MB but the cost is very high so I'm looking at doing a bit of self modification. After pulling the unit I see that the bracket is fine and does not need to be replaced but the plastic pulley itself is gone( lucky it didn't damage something whe it disinegrated) just the bearing is left on the bolt/shaft so I'm going to a couple of parts stores and see if I can find a similar pulley. There may be a problem with the diameter of the bolt the pulley fits on because it's fairly large but hopefully I'll find one that fits. Since the old pulley is gone does anyone happen to know the diameter of the original plastic pulley? Thanks Desert

What did the EPC indicate? After market is about $23.00 for the pulley. MB OE $60.00.

I logged into the EPC on line for the first time and don't see where you can search for a part without e- mailing them with info about what I'm looking for but will study the web site more tomorrow. The price I got from my local MB was $108 for the pulley and $337 for the pulley and bracket so that's quite a difference from what you said the EPC cost is. If you could give be a brief introduction to how EPC works I would appreciate it....Thanks Desert

Armed with the part number you can Google it or check with a favorite parts supplier.

I'm back to my original question which is "what is the part number" or then how do I find that number on EPC? E-mail them or is there another way? When I click on "parts" I don't get anything that shows me a parts list or search for parts. If you have a source for an aftermarket pulley can you please give it to me...Thanks, Desert

When you follow the URL in my first post, there is a Mercedes log on the upper left corner. Beneath that is a list of options, choose 'subscribe'. Follow the instructions, and it will set you up with an account.
When you get that set up, you can go back to the "home" page and go into the 'Log In' option. There should be a place to enter your vehicle info; the VIN, year, model, U.S./Euro, etc.... When yoou have that info input, there will be drop downs for the major subsections of the vehicle. Inside those will be more detailed options, letting you get to the exploded drawings and part number lists. It can be a bit intimidating, if you're not familiar with the whole thing, but with a bit of practice, you can get the part number for pretty much whatever you want. Then you can go hunting for the actual part at whatever supplier you choose. I can't access it from my work computer, so I'm working off of memory, so there may be a step or two that isn't quite exact in my expalanation, I apologize in advance if I get you confused. Best wishes, Scott

Thanks very much for the info, I have just come back from my local MB dealer which is way way across Tucson from us, the parts manager there said he had the pulley but when I got there it was not even close so it appears that the AC was added to this car when it was brought back from Germany and it was installed using some non factory parts. Given this problem I doubt EPC will have the right part also but I will certainly check with them. It looks like the bracket that holds the pulley will have to be fabricated to match a different size pulley. It's not rocket sicence but I'll let my mechanic do it as I don't have the welding equipment or expertise that may be necessary. Thanks again for introducing me to EPC. Desert

EPC is an acronym for Electronic Parts Catalog. It's exactly what your dealer will look at.

We live in Tucson Arizona. Today, the 14th of October it will be 97 degrees. We had two solid months of over 105 degrees this summer. Not having an AC is not an option here, at least not for us.....Desert

The 280 SLs did not come with AC automatically like the made for USA models.
