Damper Cage

Working on my 81 380 SLC which has been up on blocks for 3 years. I have a loud screeching noise coming from the area of the fuel pump. Planning to replace the fuel pump and filter. I was told I should replace the damper cage also. What does it do and how does it go bad? I can't find anything about the damper cage by searching threads. Thanks, bob

the damper cage on my 75 450SL is a tin can with an in and outlet. Nothing in it. $143 tin can. It seems to be a place to store gas in before entering fuel pump, maybe to reduce head pressure from a tank of gas trying to push its way into the pump.

Good time to renew all hoses and check the tank screen. Check and clean the Damper Cage. Don't see any reason to replace it.

The screen screws into the bottom of the tank. The main fuel supply line screws into the screen. If you are lucky the screen will come out with the hose. If not it takes either a 43 or 46mm socket to remove. Can't remember the size.

If you don't have the service manual. Here is a link to the on-line 107 service manual.

Rowdie, thanks for the link. The in tank screen requires a 46mm socket. Any idea where I can find one. Bob

Google it. Also check local auto part stores for loaners or purchase.

46mm = 1 13/16"

I believe my 46mm came from Northerntool.com

In any case you'll probably need to grind the edges of the socket to remove the bevel. The screen nut is very short.
