M120 V12 + early R107

Hello all. So lately I've been thinking of what to do for the next project, and I think I've come up with an idea.

I live in California, so for cars after 1975 I am limited to what I can do with them. So I want to get a 1971-1975 R107, dump the engine and transmission and put a M120 V12 in to it, with a transmission (must be a manual).

I know it sounds pretty wild, but I like a challenge. I saw a thread on here about a guy putting a M120 in to a 560SL (although it was a late model one, 80s I think).

Anyway, how crazy am I? I think the guy who did the other car kept the automatic, but that's no fun...

Would it be possible to find a sub-5000 dollar SL of the correct years without a engine or transmission with a decent exterior (I am inexperienced with bodywork)?

I don't know too many inline 5-6 gear manual transmissions that can take over 430 foot pounds of torque besides the Tremec T56

All comments, suggestions and ideas welcome, thanks.

Hello

I'm the guy that put the M120 into the 560SL. It would go into a pre 1975 450 just as easily as they are essentially the same everywhere that counts. If you go to the performance paddock there is a guy taking orders for custom bell housings at this time. The M120 transforms these cars into a 21 century cruiser. You will get 12 - 13 second 1/4 mile performance and over 20 MPG all with very very smooth performance.

Excellent. I'll be reading through your whole thread, but if you mind..could I ask you a quick few questions?

First, did you have to cut any fender wells, firewall or anything radical like that? What did you use for engine mounts? Just fab up your own?

Electronics, did you run stock stuff?

And lastly, transmissions. Did you use the stock auto from the 600sel/s600?

Anyone know if there are any manuals that could bolt-on to a M120?

Thanks in advance

The only thing I had to cut off the car was the mount for the expansion tank. The front subframe had to be reconstructed. The rear subframe also had to be reconstructed to use a 2.65 diff from the original SL600 to be compatible with the 722.6 5 speed trans. That will not be required if you use a manual or an earlier 4 speed.

For electronics I ran the stock ME system as it was needed to talk to the 722,6 trans controller. Allot of problems go away if you loose the 722.6 transmission but the 5 speeds overdrive with lockup converter is a very nice thing to have.

All of this is pretty much documented in my build thread. See http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/performance-paddock/178997-m120-into-560sl-pictures.html

For custom bell housings see. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/performance-paddock/271090-non-mb-trans-mb-engines.html
