faint high pitched wine from 1985 280sl

The wine starts when I take my foot off the gas and stops when ideling or accelerating.

Can not pin point source of noise as it seems to surround the cockpit. It is very faint but noticable.

Any thoughts appreciated.

My first guess would be the rear end, and I'd check or change the fluid to insure it was correct, and turn up the stereo.

Top up or down?

I find it easier to find a noise with the top up.
