A bit embarassed to ask this, but I'm dying to know...

I used to have a 'kinderseat' in my '86 560SL, but took it out and made a new plywood platform with kit-supplied carpet, like OEM. I didn't have an original to compare to or get measurments from at the time, so I made up my own retaining clips at the front and copied the cut-outs from pictures.

Now, I have a friend with the original platform in his '85 380SL. Neither of us can figure out how the thing is fastened down. There's what look like 2 handhold cutouts at the front, like I made, but pulling on them doesn't budge the platform. Are there screws in there, or do you rip up the carpet to access the fasteners, or what?

There are two metal clips at the front of the platform that will stop you lifting it out by what looks like handholds. You need to get the rear of the platform to come up and then it should rotate towards the front seats around the front edge of the platform.

If the first aid holder is still there you can yank it up by that. Otherwise apply inegnuity (in my case a screwdriver to lever up the back edge).

The cut outs on the front are there for the purpose of removing the platform.

I agree that seems logical but on our 82 380SL we pulled HARD on the front cut outs and it would not release. The clips on the front are tough. Hence my advice to the poster.

Not only logical but the way it was designed to be removed. Never tried any other way so perhaps you are right. Worth a try.

Unless it was modified by someone in the past, you need to get a hold of it and do a good old fashioned clean and jerk.

Thanks guys. The "clean and jerk" did it. I doubt it had been removed since it left the factory (54,000 mi '85 380SL).
