89 560sl window relay question
I have a 89 560sl and both windows stopped working a couple of weeks ago. The fuses are good and I do not think both switches would go bad at exactly the same time. By reading past posts I have found that there is a window relay above the fuse panel behind the passenger side kick panel. I removed the panel. There appears to be two relays. One silver metal above fuse #20 and one with a brownish plastic cover a bit higher up above fuse #2. Can anyone tell me if the brownish plastic one is the window relay. If so (and now for the really dumb question) how do I remove it? Does it pull straight out?
Thanks all. |

I overcame my reluctance to just yank on parts and pulled the metal covered relay. I think that is the correct one. I cleaned the pins and reinserted it but that did not fix the problem. I will get a new relay and give that a try.

There is a known problem with the stock fuses. The fuse link and ends are aluminum, while the holder in the car is brass. This can result in dis-similar metals corrosion when air and moisture are added to the environment, a whitish, non-conductive, powdery coating over the metal of the fuse.
You can go to your favorite auto parts store and get a small packet of terminal grease for 2 or 3 dollars at most. Then remove each fuse one at a time, buff the ends with a coarse cloth (non-abrasive) such as heavy denim or canvas. Coat the ends of the fuse with a THIN film of the grease and replace. Do this one at a time to keep from getting the wrong fuse in a circuit. The grease will keep air and moisture away from the contact points, preventing future corrosion. I'm not saying this is your problem, but everyone should do this as a preventative measure, especially if you live in an area with high humidity. Scott

Thanks, I did pull the fuses and clean up the ends with sandpaper and contact cleaner. I will get some terminal grease on my next trip to the parts store.

The relay just arrived. I popped it in and the windows now work fine. My driving season is now extended. A happy ending.
