Possible SL600 cold feet

Hi Guys,

Ive had the sickness for a late 90's R129 with the mystic w140 V12 for years now and Ive heard both Good and Bad from past and present owners and Im kinda at a crossroad. Got my eye on a 97 SL600 with 70,000 mi. Pretty good service history. (only missing the past 4 yrs and looks really good and clean. No dash lights, no rattles, no nothing. She runs real good and responds perfect and the price is not crazy. The thing is I dont have a money tree in my back yard and my printing press isn't what it use to be. So, should I expect a couple of years without a 5,000 bill to rebuild a powerpack or some crazy shiznit like that? Or dont do it unless I have 20,000 in my checking account? Any help would be awesome fellas and greatly appreciated!

Sounds like you may have found a great car ! Rather or not you end up with a major repair bill is a spin of the roulette wheel ! As I told you at BenzWorld, I bought mine for very little cash compared to what I felt it was worth, but with potentially 10 k in repairs. ( throttle actuators ). I rewired them and the car is flawless. $ 300 bucks. And tons of research and some labor. All in all tons of fun. You gotta love the chase. If I wasn't mechanically inclined, a $ tealer would have wanted $ 10k. Some deep pockets do that. Many of can't. If you have zero mechanical ability and not tons of liquid capital perhaps the 600 isn't your cup of tea. I'm pretty sure anything that can ( and eventually will) go tits up on my car I will be able to repair. Owning this magnificent car for this summer has delivered to me everything I could have expected from the purchase price. If it died today, I'd still love it as a work of art in my garage. Or the living room if SWMBO will let me throw out the furniture and put in a turntable . Go buy the damn thing, and have the time of your life !

no papers for the past 4 years means probably no maintenance for the past four years. plenty of folks buy an expensive car, don't want to spend a dime on maintenance, then trade it in a few years later having never done a lick of service. an engine will indeed still run after 30,000 miles on the same oil. but do you want to own it? i don't.
