'77 450SL Turn Signal issues

Hello my fellow enthusiasts!

I have a turn signal issue and my mechanic said from what he can tell it's the relay. The turn signal light indicator in the car used to flash fast but now it's just a solid light. I have to manually hold the flasher up or down to indicate I am making a turn. Today I checked my hazard light and when I press it down it just buzzes and the flashers don't work at all.

Is this the relay? It there someplace I can go to see step by step relay replacement instructions? From what I understand this relay is in the dash?

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!

It is probably the relay. On most years it is located behind the instrument cluster. There were a few years beginning in the late 70's through the '81 model year that the relay is part of the hazard switch. The 450SL after chassis number 042310 Federal and 043358 California. There are some earlier chassis numbers in the 041000 area that also received them. The part number is on the bottom of the hazard switch. 123 820 02 05 is the switch with built in relay. It is no longer available new.

I did some research this morning. Fairly certain your '77 has the early model switch.
Look at the switch. If there is a K inside a circle on the red button it is the early model. If it has the letters SWF it is the one with the built in relay.
To access the relay for the early model I remove the instrument cluster. This requires removing the steering wheel which is fairly easy on a 450SL. Instructions are in the on line service manual. Model 107

I have heard it can be removed by reaching up from below but I have never tried it.

Good luck.

My hazard switch has the "k" with the circle - mystery solved on that one - thanks!!

And thank you for the link to the manual! Off to check it out now.... I will report back. Any idea of the part number for the relay? I grabbed a bunch of relays off a 560sl in a pull a part yard but likely did not get the one I need, seeing as how they moved where they go... :-(

Unfortunately, it's not a relay. The flasher unit is an electronic module that hides out behind the instrument cluster. I was able to get one at a local chain of import part specialists a few years ago, but I can't find one at *************** or Germanstar.net now. You might have to go to a dealership.

Is right!! Crap - and all this time I was thinking it was a relay I needed. Do you happen to know the part number for this module? Or, is it the number that was given above - 123 820 02 05?

Tomato, Tomato. Relay, Pulse sender unit. Whatever. PN is 000 821 09 63 which is replaced by 000 821 10 63. The 560SL unit is the same* 10 63.

* Need to look at the receptacle on the 450. The 10 63 has 4 prongs.

Another link. EPC-net Online - Subscription Step 1 of 3 Free for US residents. It will ask for credit card to verify residency but no charge. Look up PNs.

GS. net ?. Google mercedes 0008211063 http://www.everythingbenz.com/z/part/0008211063-mercedes-turn-signal-flasher-relay

Sorry. That was not as funny as I meant it to be. I am sure calling it a relay is one of those nails on a chalk board things to Scott as that is his area of expertise.

000 821 10 63 is the current correct part number.

Okay - I have the relay now and am finally circling back. I have downloaded the pages from the manual that tell how to remove the steering wheel and how to remove the instrument cluster. Once these are removed, will I see the relay right away? Is it on the left or the right? Towards the front or towards the back? I searched youtube and no one has uploaded a video going through these steps. Would have been a nice preview.
