1995 SL 500 Speaker/Amp/Audio neophyte seeking help!

I'm am the fortunate new owner to a beautiful SL500 that has a couple of small nagging defects. I am such a neophyte that the best i can do is describe the symptoms of the plagued audio system and beseech the advice of the better informed. I've searched the forums deeply and i couldn't figure out where to start so I made my own thread.

I'm not sure whether or not it makes a difference so i'll try to provide as much detail as possible. For starters, the antenna mast is missing (first owner must have enjoyed a carwash or two). The vehicle has sat garaged for the last 8 years, receiving annual fluid changes but only being driven to and from the dealership.

When the tape cassette deck, radio, WB, is played, even at maximum volume, the audio output is low at best. The audio volume fluctuates, also, coming in and out. The sound fades from one speaker to the next, even at maximum volume the output is very low. Periodically the speakers emit loud popping and crackling. Sometimes the sound completely fades and can stay out for long periods of time before creeping back in at low volume.

Since i dont really know where to start i figured i may as well replace the mast antenna, does anyone know where i should start with solving this wiring/sound/audio problem?

The coupling electrolytic capacitors in the Bose power amplifier are most likely bad. This is a common problem. They go bad simply due to age. The amplifier will need to be removed from the car and repaired. A car audio shop should be able to help. Try searching the audio section of this forum.
