R170 SLK buyers question

I've been a long time member of the forum but all my Benz have "OM" engines, so I haven't been on the SL side before. I hope I am in the right place. I am contemplating a '04 SLK with 94k on it, auto. Going to see it today. In my searches I have found posts generally favorable regarding the SLK, no major problems but I didn't find anything recent. I didn't find a "buyers guide" either. My major concerns with the car are three: does the top, transmission or engine (2.3L kompressor) have any common problems of note? Most everything else I can take care of myself. The price on the car is $11K, which seems to be book or a little less. Any comments regarding this would be appreciated also. I thank you in advance for any insights regarding the car. It will be a daily driver and get approx. 100 miles per day added to the odometer.

I just picked up a SLK230 and have been going through it. I think you will find the car to be pretty reliable. Nothing really stands out as being problematic other than hydraulic top cylinder seals. All five can be rebuilt with little effort using seal kits found on ebay. Make sure to use the proper MB fluid in the top pump. It doesn't hold much, one $16/liter bottle should fill it up.

Search for the R170 K40 relay issues. They sometimes suffer from cold solder joints and can easily be resolded.

Most common flaw is the scuffing console and interior finish. I'm dealing with removing the finish and repainting it all. Factory colors are available.

Well Dan maybe we will go full circle and have like cars again. From 240D's to SLK's.

Have you replaced the lower top cylinder? I understand that one is a 6 hour job.

I have cut a deal for a '99, manual transmission, SLK with the AMG package. Occasionally my manual transmission fetish pays off. There is evidently very little demand for a manual SLK which made it the cheapest one I saw in the area. It's a solid, great driving car with a few issues that the seller is taking care of.
