Oil change questions in reguards to a 1983 500SL

I have always had a shop change the oil in this car, however, I always change the the oil in all of my other cars, so I wonder why not this one. What is the best oil to use in the car? I was thinking about Mobil 1 15/40 but have been unable to locate it. I live in Eugene Oregon, thus our typical summer day does not exceed 85 degrees. The car has 66,000 miles. Finallly, What size of Hex socket to I need to buy for the oil drain plug. Thanks for any information, Nick.

14MM hex for the plug. 17MM socket for the canister. Buy the filter kit from the dealer. It comes with the O ring and crush washers. It is universal for all 107s so you will end up with one extra washer that is used on the pan plug on the M110 engine. No comment on oil. 8L (approx. 8.5qt) capacity but don't over fill.

Buy a set of metric wrenches and a set of metric allen keys.

You will need them elsewhere on your SL.

Yeah, there's Mobil (not Mobile) 1 5W40, but not a 15W40 flavor.

I was at W*mart a few mins ago and they have many diesel rated oils, both syn (5w40) and dino-based (15W40) including Mobil (not Mobile) Delvac 1300 15W40.

I also spotted Mobil (not Mobile) 1 0W40 in 5qt jugs for $22.46. That oil meets the current MBz spec, if that matters to you, NH500sl.

I don't think a 0 weight oil will is suitable fort that engine. Maybe for the newer engines but not for an old and probably worn engine like an M117. Joking aside, I put either 15w40 or 20w50 dyno oil. I use those formulas because they have more zddp then other formulas. As you're in NH, you may prefer a slightly thinner oil in cold temps.

The thin, energy-conserving oils will never meet MBz visco specs, old or new. The Europeans still favor engine protection vs. picking up .33 MPG.

dunno about that - I use 0-40 syn in my 99 . per factory recomendations
still on the 83 use the real dino and I still suggest 10-40

Not going to get into a war on which is best. Do your own research and decide what to use. I did and I use RotellaT 15-40.

Something thicker than 30wt and thinner than 60wt and you should do fine.

I put synthetic 10w40 of whatever is on sale in my 350.
