Time to replace the rear brakes on my 1983 500 sl AMG...options for better brakes?

I need to do the above mentioned job on my SL. Is their an upgrade for the rear brakes that I might consider since I'm going to do everything.

I can't speak to your specific car but, can offer generalities.

What do use the car for? ( Daily driver , Sunday driver , track days? )

Define " Better " .

Drilled / slotted rotors on a lightly driven street car do nothing.

Making the rear brakes stronger will add more rear brake bias and make the tail more apt to step out under braking. While desirable in a race car, it is somewhat difficult to live with on the street and outright dangerous for anyone that has not driven a race car to an accomplished level.

Have a look at later cars, they might have larger diameter rotors ( more levereage ) but you will have to change the fronts as well. ( probably the master cylinder too. )

The car is a Sunday Driver. I have owned it for about eight years, and have put about 8,000 miles on it. I would never track the car, though I do tend to take it on long drives on days that I do driver it.

No upgrade, I'm pretty sure the later gen SL's used the same rear brakes. You can upgrade the fronts.

If your brakes are worn, rebuilding calipers, new hoses and pads will give you a notable upgrade.
