Disable Steering Lock..?

I put a new tumbler and VIN matched key in my '79 SL. It works fine..BUT..Whenever I remove the key..and reinsert, it is very hard to get past the steering lock to start the car. I don't need the lock..How can I disable it ?....I assume it would entail grinding off the stud on the lock itself..Has anyone had the experience ?..thanks..jv..

I haven't done it the way the on-line links suggest, but here is one that light help. More maybe in the diesel forum.
