560SL Brakes won't bleed - ABS?
Aloha all,
Yes, I know this topic has been discussed in the past, but please hear me out. I decided to redo my brakes on my 87 560SL. I have changed out the rotors, calipers, and brake hoses. The master cylinder reservoir was full of sludge, so I sucked it all out, removed and cleaned with denatured alcohol. I also removed the master cylinder and cleaned, put back together and bench bled. My problem is I cannot get the rear brakes to bleed; the fronts bleed fine. I know there is a small separate chamber on the rear of the resivoir and it must be very full to flow into...it is full. I am using the motive pressure bleeded and no fluid will move to the rear (I have disconnected the line up to the brake line block at the bottom of firewall to observe). I have tried the bleeding in many ways: with the ignition off; ignition in the on position; battery disconnected. Still no fluid moves to the rear. Finally I had the car towed in to a local shop that only works on Mercedes. They should be able to do it, right? No luck, the have tried everything I said I have done and now tell me they "think" the ABS pump is no good. My brakes worked fine prior, and the ABS system worked as a month ago I had to clean the ABS sensors as they were activating the system at low speed stops. I can't imagine the pump went bad because components were changed downstream. Any help you can offer is appreciated! Clay |

Find the brake pressure warning switch.( not the brake fluid level sensor ) This is where front and rear lines come to a valve / switch that senses if brake pressure is lost to one end. On some cars, when this occurs the low pressure side is blocked off. You will either need to push a pin , slightly unscrew the switch / open the front bleeder or some sort operation.
I can't offer any more specific info. |

Clay, the later r107's have a design fault with the brake fluid reservoir.
The rear of the reservoir which is usually dirty ,feeds the rear brakes. You have to overfill the reservoir and tilt it towards the back of the car. You should then see the fluid slowly filling that rear part of the reservoir. Strangely, the rear storage in reservoir feeds to the front fitting on the master cylinder! There you have it.Feel free to contact me with any further problems. |
