New 300SL owner...

Hello all.

Have decided to add another Merc to the collection after getting smitten with my 95 E320. It is a 90 300SL auto with 110000 miles. Classic story. First owner babied it. second owner neglected it. Mechanicals good. Roof does not work automatically. Am going into this with eyes open. and plan to spend some time researching before asking questions. Already love this car and am looking forward to getting stuck in.

In the 3 years I've had mine, the hard top was off only for a week to check the soft top and resew some stitching. A few cylinders are leaking so manual top up / down wasn't a big deal. All ( 12 ) of the top cyl will start to leak when the car is older regardless of owners care.

As for the rest of the car, 6 cyl cars are a great value because many go after the 8 and even the 8 market is down. With the 5 speed auto, a 6 gets along just fine, as these cars aren't "sports cars" and more of a comfortable highway cruiser.

Good feedback. Thank you. Am thinking of this car as a cruiser and like the 6 a lot. I am currently fascinated by the roof system so I will probably not resist the temptation to figure out how to get it working.

I have a 91' like yours and have about 12 years experience with it. So, if it can happen, it probably has happened to mine. If you have any specific questions, PM me. Tod
The soft top problems are often resolved by resetting the controller, assuming you have oil pressure and no leaks. Lot's of info in past forum discussions on how to do that.

'90 300SL

Hello and congrats. My garage queen has 91K and the only semi-serious problem may be fixed. I added Bars Leak to the A/F as the heater core developed a leak. No leak for 3 months now; my fingers are still crossed. A couple of potential helps to you are:
There is a good guy (Kris) who fixes the very hard to find cruise control module for a very fair price and if you have the original Becker radio and your car is an early one, it DOES NOT come out with the regular tools. As I didn't want to break anything it took a couple of hours bending little tools as access is thru the cassette door. Also, there is another fellow who fixes these.

If I can help I am Ron at rfpmoxie@charter.net.

Good luck!

Welcome! Slightly OT (or maybe not), I saw a post here a few years ago referencing a central grounding point somewhere behind the fuel meter assembly that feeds the lambda control unit. Can anyone point me to that post?

If I have a problem with my Mercedes, I go to MercedesShop. If I have a problem with my BMW, I go to BimmerNut.
If I have a probem with my Dell, I reboot it. I was an engineer for them for 10 years and we blamed everything on Microsoft.
