New to R129, and Need Some Direction

I purchased an R129 (1998) approximately a month ago (44,000 miles, pano, heated seats, xenon's) that did not come with an owner’s manual which I did find used on eBay, as well as the service manual in a digital format. I have been able to get the CD to partially work on a windows 7 machine but some portions of the CD are not functioning properly, particularly the electronic trouble shooting section. I have also been doing global searches for my issues but find nothing that matches. I’m not completely inexperienced with MBZ’s 3 sedans and also have a 107.

Issues:
1) I replaced the battery (it was original) and did (or so I thought) followed the instructions to re-sync the (new from a dealer) remotes, etc. several times but find that what I believe should happen with the remotes does not. My understanding is that the windows should open slightly when exiting the car to prevent damage to the door frames? This is not happening and I am manually lower the windows slightly upon ingress and egress.

2) I also believe (possibly mistakenly) that when accessing the car with the remotes I should be able to hold a button on the remote and have the windows and/or trunk open which is nonfunctional as well.

3) Additionally and possibly connected is the trunk release button on the dash. The red light on this button is lighted and the button is nonfunctional as well.

If my understanding/assumptions are incorrect please let me know. On my next day off I’m planning on checking all fuses, etc. but suspect that the fuse has blown for a reason and replacement will only result in the same blown fuse without resolving the problem. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Tim

To reset the windows lower them to bottom, let go of button. Hold the up button untill they stop + 3 seconds. This lets the controller know the window is in the full up position. I did this on mine and unhappy with how hard it pressed in to the seal. I plan on laying something soft and thin over top of glass to fool controller into thinking the window is full up.

To reset remote, it is supposd to be press remote button 2 x while pointing at the red / green light on the door handle ( it is IR not RF making line of sight importiant. )

Pressing button and holding is supposed to lower windows, if you have not established full up, this function won't work.

I'd have to look at my 97 to see if there is a light. In any event, the system thinks the trunk is open ( red light on )

97 SL320,

Thank you for your response. I was finally able to re-sync both windows and remotes. The only issue remaining is the non functioning trunk release button on the dash, and a drain on the battery.

I did get a service manual DVD and have it partially working on a windows 7 machine but the electronic trouble section is not functioning. If the trunk release button on the dash stays 'lighted' because it thinks the trunk is open when its not, is it possible that this error is from the trunk light remaining on after closing? If so, could that killl my (new) battery in 4 or 5 days?

Tim

Trunk light could still be on. If the lid has been closed for say 5 min or more, open it and feel the bulb / lens. If hot the light is staying on.

Below the latch there is a slot where you can trip the "trunk light off with lid up lever" with a key or similar object. The trim around mine has come off making it easy to trip by hand.

As for the DVD, some of these are "fixed" to work outside of normal channels, you need to follow their install instructions exactly. Are you trying to access the electrical diagrams? If so, there is an AutoCad viewer that needs to be installed first.

Thank you very much 97 SL320,

I have the battery out of the car on a charger and will check the trunk light as soon as it is charged and back in the car. It will be interesting to see if the red light on the dash trunk release button remains lighted after removing the bulb in the trunk. Is the red light on the trunk release dash button indicating the system thinks the trunk is open based on the trunk light, or via the locking/release mechanism? Lastly, can you point me in the right direction of the auto-cad plug in you mentioned?

Thanks to all that posted.

The issue was indeed the bulb in the trunk staying on when closed. After removing the bulb the light on the dash button has gone out. I still need to fix the mechanism but the battery drain is gone.

Thanks!

Tim
