Fuel Filter Replacement Questions

The 380sl manual suggested that replacing the fuel filter was relatively simple. But, lo and behold, like everything else, it didn't turn out to not be as simple as I thought it would be for several reasons. So, I was wondering if you guys could clarify some things for me.

First, the manual suggested that the filter could be removed simply by removing the screws on both sides of the filter, loosening 2 screws on the metal band that holds the filter and pump, and then taking the filter out.

Does that mean to bend that metal band down, and pull the filter out towards the rear of the car, as that band doesn't seem it will bend that far down without breaking?

Or is the filter supposed to slide out towards the wheel, which would also require removing the fuel lines on the pump and accumulator?

In either case, while I was trying to figure out how to remove the filter, I tried to loosen the nut on the fuel pump, and that's now leaking, even though I tried to tighten it. So, I was also wondering if I need to remove that line anyway to replace the sealing rings on it, and if those rings are available without having to buy a new pump?

Thanks very much in advance for any help you guys can give me on this, as I need to get the car back on the road ASAP.
