1991 300SL Cruise Control engages briefly

I couldn't find a result from doing a forum search that I could use so here's my issue...

I'm from the "keep a constant rate of speed" school of freeway driving (72 mph) so I use the cruise control in all my cars often.

When I attempt to set the speed/turn it on, the cruise control surges, engages momentarily and then disengages.

1. Is that an amplifier (the unit under the steering column) issue?
2. Is it an actuator (the unit under the intake manifold) issue?
3. Is there another issue?

Thanks,

AL

Cruise control- fixed!!!

Well it turned out like what my indy mech of 10 years said: "95% of the time the cruise amplifier is where the break down is." I began to have my doubts after buying a used (supposedly tested amp unit) installing it and still my cruise didn't work. Specially since changing the actuator looked like a tough job, I decided to try my luck with another used amp unit from eBay.

Low and behold, the second unit works like a champ with my original coding chip!

Now once again on the highways and keeping a steady pace courtesy of a working cruise control.

Getting my original fixed with Forum member

Since I don't know how long the used one I purchased from eBay is going to last, I'm going ahead and having my original one inspected and refurbished by our fellow forum member JamesDean (Kris). When I get it back, I'll then install that one for my daily use and have the used one as an emergency spare. I've already purchased one of Kris' units for my 1990 300E and will be installing it in my son's car this weekend in San Diego.
