Maybe the bolts that hold male part of the catch (bolted to the trunk) have come loose and it needs to be re-aligned?

If the bolts are snug, is there anything (coin, stick, nut or bolt, etc.) stuck in the catch?

If you know it's clear, you can unbolt the male end (first take care in marking the position of the piece so that you can bolt it back in the exact same place as before) and insert it into the catch to see if the locking action of the catch works properly.

Let us know what you find.

Have a close look at the car side of the latch, sometimes the latch flips over and won't let the lid close. Does this car have power trunk pull down? If so the situation may be more complicated.

With a situation like this, removing the pin from the lid and testing is a good thing.

Also to prevent getting locked out of trunk until this is fixed, remove the inner latch panel and tail light assembly nearest the latch. If the lid closes it might not reopen.
