R129 SL500 with M113 Oil leak. Is it the oil level sensor?

Hi all,

I'm a first time poster and seeking for help!
My 99' SL500 developed an oil leak. I did already replace the valve cover gasket and oil pressure cover a year back, so the front of the engine and the areas below valve cover gaskets are dry!

After reading a few posts my assumption is that it might be coming from oil level sensor or one of the oil pan gaskets. Is it common at all that the upper oil pan gasket is leaking? I sure hope not :-(

Any idea from these pictures on what's leaking?

Thanks,
Tim

Hello Tim,
I've owned two MY 2000 both have had the 113 V8 and the only place that I've seen an oil leak is from the Valve Cover "breather cover" that uses a MB Sealant rather than a Gasket to seal the "breather cover" to the Valve Cover. Mostly on the passenger side!

I already fixed both side breather covers a year ago, they are completely dry now. The leak is coming from somewhere else.

Pressure washing would help clean things up to make finding it much easier.
You know something is leaking but rather than throwing parts ect at the motor
confirm first.

Thanks for the help!
I did clean up everything yesterday and looked again today. Upper/lower oil pans are dry and the only fresh oil is right between transmission and engine. It's 100% no transmission oil so I'm quite sure it's the rear main seal.

I'm aware it's a pretty nasty job requiring removal of transmission etc. but does anyone have a DIY on that job? Curious especially how to support the transmission when lowering it.

Thanks,
Tim
