My top turns out to be original (’72) but in such good condition I thought I'd try to have only the plastic replaced. After taking the time to remove the top from the frame very carefully (one slit through the top and I'd be done), I felt it was salvageable. Local repair shop said, bring it in, $150 no problem. Well sure it’s not a problem when you want to sew the new plastic over the old, then cut out the old. All kinds of weird thoughts raced through my head including getting the heck out of there.
3 Options remain, 1) $400ish for new top. 2) Bye the plastic and do it myself (which couldn’t be worse than the $150 method. 3) Find someone that can do it correctly (but the cost my be in the $200-300 range) but I may as well go to $400 and go new…
Therefor, I’m willing to try it myself and if the plastic is not expensive, what the heck. If I screw it up I’ll just go with the new.
I’m told that the hard part is getting the window to stay in place while sewing, but I’m thinking about taping or securing in the slits somehow while sewing. Also getting a straight line… Also what type of sewing machine will work?
Has anyone ever done this them selves? Any recommendations when doing it myself? Other than not having to many beers before attempting to sew it.
