There are some general buyers guides for 107s. They apply to the 350sl as well as later models. Differences are that 350sl has Djetronic electronic fuel injection. Simple system that works fine when properly set up. But not if someone has messed with it. Car should idle smoothly at about 700rpm. Check under load that car is lively and that transmission shifts smoothly. Also check if it is an 043 or an 044. (euro or NA). Euro is 3.5L, NA is 4.5L.
BTW, my car is a 350sl, so feel free to ask questions once you have seen pics.

I had a 72, a nuts and bolts restoration, beside Graham, I feel like I know these cars well.
As mentioned the Djet can be an issue if "messed with" but other than that - rust - frame, and floorboards. AC? and or heat - flaps working? Top - mechanism working Steering - should be little if any play.

Thanks again for the responses. I hope to have a opportunity to view the car this weekend and want to check out the numbers. Such as the car body, engine , transmission etc. but was wondering where they are located. I assume the body number is inside the drivers door on the frame but am not sure about the others. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

should be an engine plate in front of radiator with everything you need, also stamped on that rail as well should be body production number ( vin)

VIN should be stamped into the upper radiator support on right side of the hood latch. 1070441200???? would be correct for a 1972 North American Model model. 1070431200???? would indicate a rest of the world 350SL auto trans. 1070431000??? would be ROTW 350SL manual. Not positive on the last one. If it is a North American model there should be a Federal Certification plate riveted to the drivers door jamb. Build date in the upper left corner of the plate and the VIN. Engine number is stamped into the top of the block behind the left cylinder head. Hard to see as it is stamped into the rough cast iron block.
Note: Left and right are defined looking forward sitting in the driver seat. |
