How can I get hold of wood & leather steering wheel for 1997 SL500?

Hi,
This steering wheel is sold in the SL catalogue for approx $800 US) which is incredible! Apparently it can be retrofitted to my car quite easily although the existing airbag would need to be taken out and put back into the new steering wheel ($800 and it doesn't even include the airbag!). My car's interior is dark blue leather so I'd need the steering wheel leather to be blue as well - anyone know where I can get one from? Does any company make cheap but identical replicas? If anyone's got a (blue) leather & wooden steering wheel in excellent condition, would you be willing to swap it with me for $200? My st. wheel's in excellent condition (see pics on www.sl500.homestead.com) , I just prefer the feel of the wooden finish.

I too WAS interested in the same thing.....After inquiring about the cost, I gave up. It's true, you have to supply the air bag, have it profrssionally installed......and the off you go, and hopefully will still have the warrenty intact if NOT dealer installed. I also inquired at the dealership and was told that a S Class wheel would fit, and cost approx $1500-2000 installed!!!!!! I agree, it really looks great, but have decided against it unless I can find a less expensive alternative!

Performanceproducts had a sale for the wood and leather steering plus wood and leather shift knob combo for $699. Thats the best price I have seen so far. If bought from dealer, the steering itself will cost $1,000. I was quoted by the dealer the install will run another $1,000. I believe you will run a chance to void the warranty if the airbag is installed by an indy, that is the way MB to protect itself from liability law suite if your SRS fails in an event of an accident.
