500SL hard top stuck !!!??

Hi guys....... i tried to remove the hard top from my 96 500SL at the weekend and found that the lugs on the very back corners of the roof wouldnt let go ???

Any ideas ??

The front of the roof and the centre lugs were no problem at all !!!

Cheers !!

Hey Surfer-

Have your tried the hardtop manual tool to unlock the top? This involves releasing the latches on both sides on the trunk. There are two plastic tabs which cover the latch levers. If you have the owner's manual, the instructions are in there. If not, contact me and I'll get you the proper instructions.

Good luck!

Hey Surfer-

It's not a switch. It's a latch that moves up and down. As I recall it has red rubber around both sides. You'll need to use your manual hard soft top tool that should be in your tool pouch or nearby. You need to simply move both latches to the full upright position and the top will release. I'm going from memory but I believe this is correct.

If you look through the owners manual, there is a section in there for the release. If you would like me to fax a copy, please get back to me.

Since you're a surfer, I imagine the weather is fine for getting that hard top off!

Best of luck!

Just wondering if you ever got the hard top loose? If not, try holding the switch open for a few extra seconds. I had a similar problem on my SL and the few extra seconds cured it.
