1983 280 SL sun visors

My visors are in poor condition. They are flat and crinkeled and droop in my face. I had them clipped up to keep out of the way.
So along with my spring oil change this Saturday I had the mechanic remove them totally. I love the sleek look and much better visibility.
But the guy was afraid to remove the plastic holder that screws into the top bow that holds the ball end of the round metal rod that holds the visor itself. So now there is a small opening in the chrome bow where the ball end of the rod was attached to the top windshield frame.
The plastic pieces seem to snap into place around the ball end.
I want to snap off the plastic pieces and replace back onto the windshield frame/bow but am afraid it will break.
Should I give it a try?
Advice appreciated.
thanks,
jz

Just so I understand. The "mechanic" removed the visors and rods without removing the moldings around the plastic piece to expose the second screw. The plastic piece that the ball on the rod goes into has two screws to attach it.

Never take the car back to that idiot.

Agree...find a new mechanic.

In case you ever decide to "fix" it rather than just remove them, here's one way - The $10 Fix for Old Disintegrated Visors - Mercedes-Benz Forum

I have a 1978 350SL Euro driver and here is what I did. My visor covers looked good on the outside but the foam was way gone inside. I slid the visor off the metal rod it is mounted on while the rod was still mounted to the pillar. Then I used a razorblade to cut through the cover along the molded seam that was there along the edge closest to the rod. I replaced the foam and then used super glue to "weld" the seam back together. The seam are is basically not visible when the visor is in place because it faces the windshield frame, even when rotated as you flip the visor. It works well in my driver but is obviously not a restoration solution!

Yes, the plastic end pieces remain with the ball ends of the rods and the 2 screws are in each.
I don't want visors at all. I am tall and they bother me. Plus I like the clean slim look of the windshield top frame.
The mechanic was afraid to force them off in fear of breaking the 45 year old plastic.
So how do I get them off without breaking so I can re-install them and fill the holes?
thanks,

jz
