I am hoping some of you R129 experts might vet this SL300-24 euro import for me.

Hello SL forum! I have been active in the vintage and diesel forums for many years but have never owned an R129. My wife is in line for a new driver and I found this SL on a competing mercedes forum. Would some of you 129 experts please pick the car over a bit for me before I dive in? The idea of an import appeals to the MB geek in me and the color combo is very pleasing but what are the pros and cons of the Euro vs US versions? I see the HVAC controls are different and the claimed factory rear seat but do not know any other differences. Also this car is said to have not been optioned with cruise, how big a nightmare is it to add that on?

The car can be seen here on eBay.

Thanks in advance for sharing your insights. Bill

Given mileage can never be verified on a federalized import due to the odometer change and it is an early car ( CIS injection ) I'd pass unless you are willing / able to pay / can fix your self.

10 K is pretty heavy for one of these cars.

Given the guy is a dealer, I'd expect there will be no "deals " to be had.

It might not have a passenger air bag but a glove box in it's place.

I'd hold out for a SL320 , these have modern electronic fuel injection. The best year is 97 because it has the electronic shift 5 speed where the second choice 96 and older had the hydraulic shift 5 speed. 96 was the first year for updated interior.

Overall the 6 cyl are a great deal since they are somewhat unloved compared to the 8 and 12. At least for my 97, at 70 MPH it still has enough power not to run out of breath climbing mountain roads. It is a bit slow off the mark until the motor get to 2500 RPM but it makes nice sounds all along the way.

While I'm not positive, you may wish to do more in depth research as that year may have had the issue with the wiring harnesses deteriorating...
