Strange Squeel Upon Starting Car
When I first start my 87 560 SL in the morning, I sometimes hear a high pitched squeel for a few seconds. When I turn off the ignition and try it again, there is no squeel. Could it be a cold starter motor, loose fan belt or something worse? Thanks.

Is it a squeel or more of a high pitchet whistle? My 560SL does the same thing sometimes but it sounds more like a pressure or vaccume relief valve or the sound a tea kettle makes and it only lasts for a second or two.

This happened to me on the 560SEL and it was a loose alternator belt. The belt looked to be worn as well, so I replaced and tightened it up. Have someone help isolate it while you start the car.

Thank you for the advice...the best I can describe it is it sounds like a whine of mechanical engine, like on a child's toy...high pitched, lasts on a second or two. I've read through archives and think it must be a belt.

mine is definitely not a belt. It happen at the exact second that the engine fires off and its very much like a pressure valve or check valve.

Jerry,
Mine does the same thing, but I hear it on rare occasion after shutting off the engine. "Psssssssss...." for a few secs. Not sure what it is (?) It's coming from the pass side -- I was thinking it might be related to the HVAC, but not sure. |

I'm pleased to hear that I am not alone and that this may be "normal."
