Anxious to hear your progress, I too am the new owner of a 1981 380SL. Along with 5 various W123 models- yes a sickness to be sure. My 380SL is running RICH- washing fuel into the intake... I haven't dived into the project yet as I want to be deliberate in my approach. I suspect the fuel distributor and I am searching the yards for a potential replacement. I haven't started and observed tail pipe yet. Had car dropped off for fear of damaging internal components.
Previous owner wanted out of project for fear of HUGE BILL. I am somewhat mechanically savvy and have kept 4 of my 5 w123's on the road consistently. My first one has become my savior car for those times I can't wait for delivery of parts. Any help appreciated and will continue to watch your project evolve. |

check cold start valve , pull injectors, test patterns , see if they mist. Check for air leaks ( vacuum) I'd do all that before I'd pull the FD. One step at a time on these ol gals .Start with the easiest

Thank you Meltedpanda- I am looking forward to starting this project, nice to have a plan on where to start now. I will post results for anyone following this seemingly common problem.
