Passenger side footwell. Components hidden

I am new. Just inherited a 1986 560sl. I have decided to restore it to new condition out of respect for my father. I have already experienced the sticker shock of such an undertaking. But I will suck that up.

In slowly taking the car apart I ran across something that I wasn't expecting. When removing the carpeting on the passage side I noticed a panel at the foot that was a façade. When removing that panel there was a bunch of equipment. Does anyone know what that equipment is?

The black one is the KE-Jet controller. I can't remember anything else in there.

The stuff in the passenger footwell is mainly related to safety functions. Red connector is airbag power. I don't recall precisely what else is under there.

Stop taking the car apart, taking apart is the easy, repairing and putting together is hard. Many cars have been sold for scrap after the owner has " lost interest ".

There needs to be a comprehensive plan as to what level of restoration is acceptable and what sort of " patina " is more valued over new paint.

Next, restore or repair parts _as you take them off_ then store them rather than just stripping the entire car and being left with a hopeless project. This way about the time you run out of energy, all you have to do is turn around to see and there are shelves of ready to go parts.
