Talking Sold my 560SL to Germany

I just sold my 86 560SL and was surprised to learn that it was going to be exported to Germany for final resale. The guy that bought it told me that they were very scarce in Europe and Germans were willing to pay big money for them. If you are thinking of selling yours, it might well be worth checking into.

I replaced it with a 07 SL550 so please keep me in the SL club.

Friend of mine asked me to keep an eye out for 560's for bringing back to Germany. (he also likes the pre-107 SL's for bringing back)

The " SL Market Letter " kept track of production numbers when MB was still releasing them. About 1/2 of the 90's era R129's production went to the USA and I suspect that figure has held true for the R107.

I have a '64 356C Porsche hardtop cab More than 20 years ago some guy from Germany offered me $25,000.00 sight unseen for it to send it back there. For sale ones are pretty scarce there too.

How did you advertise your car? Was it on eBay or CL? Just wondered how you find the people that will buy here and do the exporting.

Selling direct to a European buyer can be tricky!

about 8 years ago I listed a 67 Lincoln continental on ebay, got a call from a gent in Germany, very interested.
he wired the money, buyer made all the shipping arrangements, and I dropped off at DAS auto shippers and 11 days later, he called me after picking up the car at bremerhafen

have to say, it was one of the easiest transactions ever.

I had a crazy ugly 380SL for sale four years ago at $1500. First caller was from Germany. I sold it to her USA agent for shipping there as well as some other 107 parts.

I hope the sale proceeds covered your new purchase!

I had a ratty 250 SL California coupe advertised for sale in The Star back before the turn of the century. I got a call from a gent with a German accent who said he was in the US to purchase classic cars for return to Germany for restoration and resale.


He came to my house. Saw me drive the car out of the garage,looked over the car, listened to it run, saw that it was registered and insured, inspected the title. Never even drove the car and gave me my full asking price in cash on the spot.
He left and 2 hours later a flat bed picked it up.


Looking at Hemmings you see high prices for MB classic cars selling in Europe.

I had the 560SL advertised on Craig's List. A semi-local guy is running a retirement business buying SL's and old Porsche's for sale in Germany. He showed up with a trailer (which he parked out of sight) and paid me what I had bought the car for 13 years previously. Not a lot of money but I was in need of the space not the money so was happy to see the old girl go and I didn't have to worry about passing smog, etc.

What- 75% of the 107's were sold in the US I'll bet.
Now some are heading back home.

I know a Norweigen gentlemen who who lives here in the states that makes a pretty good living exporting american cars to europe .Alot of the market is shipped for extra large vehicles and extra horsepowered vehicles .The shipping containers are arranged for such use and can be modified to hold other cargo such as other 2 wheeled vehicles.
