320sl vs 500sl
A friend of mine asked my advice in considering purchasing a used Sl. What he wanted to know is the major differences between the 320SL and the 500SL. I told him the first thing was the engine difference. The 320 seemed to be a lower priced car. Is there any years on both models to stay away from? Is a six cylinder such a bad car? Let me know what you guys think.....

Mine is a 6 shooter and it is finer than frog's hair. The 500 definitely has more horses under the hood, but the 320 does the job just fine. It really depends on personal choice whether to get a 320 or 500. I believe many of the 104 engines are also used in the S class.
As far as price is concerned, more cyclinders = more $$$, and that's why the 320 is a little less expensive on the base car. Depending on the options, a 320 can be just as much as a 500. I cannot think of any model year to stay away. But the rule of thumb is to get the latest model you can afford. The '94 model year is the most expensive on the base car, and it also has a few more horses than the later model. Tell your friend any SL is a tremendous joy to own and drive, regardless of the engine size (OK, I know someone here will disagree). What's important is to choose the car carefully, with full history that is. And go through the car with a fine comb. A wrong purchase with this kind of car can be a financial nightmare.

I have had both models and they are truly different, mostly because of the engine. The 320 feels more sporty and weighs slightly less than the 500. The 500's nose feels heavier and it takes a little while to get used to using its extra power to compensate for this. I currently own a first year, 1990, 500SL and I love it. The best part about my car is that it does not have ADS ASR or LH (nightmarish) fuel injection. It also has the most stock HP of any of the 500 series at 325HP. The only other really cool thing about the 320 is that when you get into the throttle hard, it sounds like a true exotic. I do agree with the previous post though, these are really awesome cars.
