1st gear start for euro 500 SL
I just recently purchased a 82 500SL (which I was told originaly was from South Africa) and don't know all that much about them as it the first Mercedes that I have owned.
I was woundering if anyone could help me out with information on modifying my 500SL so it with start off in first gear instead of second? Is it possible to be able to Modify it and be able to switch between the two? Also I was woundering is it possible to add a fortifier to the Transmission fluid, or even use a slightly higher viscosity trans fluid to increase the fluid pressure and possibly make the shifts a bit more posative again. The car has done 118,00 Miles cheers Damian |

Welcome to the post and congra on your "new" car!! I would recommend you to check with the manufacturer recommended trans fluid first. As far as first gear start, I don't think I can help you. Try to do a search on the forum to see if you can find anything. I believe to make the car to first gear start requires quite a bit of work. Good luck.

Most people will tell you that you need to swap out the valvebody to redirect the fluid flow for first gear starts. I don't understand why, since the system must rely on a signal to tell it when the car is warm to switch to second gear starts. In theory, you should be able to alter that signal so the system thinks it's not warm yet and keep 1st gear starts.
Can someone check me on this though, I don't have service manuals. Eli.

Switch to S-mode and put your right foot down fast, as far as it will go. Warning - only try this when you've some open road in front of you!
