500SL Gauge cluster and vent bulb replacement?
I am facing at least three backlighting problems on my 95 500SL...the clock, the odometer/trip meter, and the far rightmost vent dial indicator below the center vents.
In ALL of the cases, a firm rap with a fist onto the dashboard near each of the general areas will cause each backlight to come on...  ...and stay lit until the next time I enter the vehicle and turn the headlight switch on.Is this a wiring problem or bulb problem? And is the gauge cluster removal similar to the W124?

I have very similar issues, the whole left side of my dash and the climate control unit, are out. This is surely a bulb contact problem since tapping around the area brings them on. Repair is very simple once you get to the bulbs, just remove them, spray contact cleaner on them and replace. This will probably work for a few years til they're dirty again. I plan to do my dash someday, I hate the idea of removing the cluster for a bulb though. Eli.

May I suggest you put a dab of silicone grease on the contacts to ensure good contact. It is sometimes sold as "dialectic grease" from Permatex.

My far right vent bulb does exactly the same thing !! Cant really see how to get to it though ???
Does anyone know the correct procedure ?? I have a 97 500sl
