1979 450 Sl

I have never changed the charcoal canister on my 79 450SL.
What is the function of the the canister ? - does it need to be changed periodical

The charcoal cannister stores fuel vapor while the engine is shut off. When it is re-started, a purge line sucks the vapor into the intake so it can be burned. Generally you don't need to replace them.
