Rims

Can you put OEM 1992 SL rims (16 inch) on an 87 SL?

16" Wheels

Richard,

Yes you can fit 16" on your 87 SL provided you install 6mm spacers to prevent inside tire wall from rubbing on steering track rod balljoint rubber sleeve due to the 35mm offset. I have them on both my 450 5.0 and 420. You might need to glue a rubber block 7mm to the lock stop bracket on the lower suspension arm to avoid rubbing on the sway bar on full lock. This is only minimal turn circle loss and hardly noticeable. I have 16"X8 with 225X60X16 tires. See pic. With the 6mm spacers you dont need extra long lug bolts, the originals would suffice.

Now that is information I can use...thank you. I think I'll try to find a set of 16's with the proper off-set instead. They look great on your car. Cheers.

Remember, if you use spacers your messing up the original geometry of the suspension, which can lead to handling problems. I was advised not to use them.
