560 newbie question...
I am a newbie here and don't even own an MB. I am a Porsche and BMW guy, but somehow got roped into doing front brakes on my ex's mom's '88 560sl - don't ask. I am pretty competent with a wrench on my P-car and Bimmer, but have not yet worked on MB. This car belongs to a middle-aged woman, so I don't really need performance parts here. What type of rotors and pads do I need and what else should I buy for this job? Any tricks I may need to know and is this job pretty straightforward? Thanks.

Stay OEM; Fastlane (see banner on this site) can supply at a discount.

OEM parts only. Not that expensive from Fastlane. I just did the brakes on my 88 560SL including master cylinder and it was very easy and no special tools required.

I agree with the above comments. I did the pads all around, front rotors and front brake hoses on my 560SEL a few weeks ago. Nothing special, in order to replace the rotors, bearings have to come out. Check them before placing a Fastlane order. Mine were still fresh, so no need to replace.
Do a search and you'll find tons of info. |

OK, I haven't done the job yet, as she's out of town for the week. What's this I hear about bearings? I picked up the rotors and pads from my local parts guy, as I needed a fuel pump for my 911 too and he them all there. I'm not real familiar with MB models. This car is the small, two-door convt. 560. Do bearings have to come out on this car, in order to replace the rotors? How much do they run? I don't want to get stuck with the car apart on a Sunday afternoon and then have to order more parts. I hope this all looks self-explanatory when I get it apart.

I just want to echo what th eother guys said. Make sure they are original parts. Don't ry and buy longer lasting, less dust pads. hard pads on hard rotors equals lots of squeal. It is inevitable. Use OEM! Don't try and skimp in this area.

This might be a moot point, since it's not your car, but if the amount of brake dust is annoying, you might consider installing Kleen Wheels.
I hope this doesn't spark a religious debate. I'd also check the condition of the lug nuts. Brand new ones are less than $3 each.

Hi Guys I have a 1987 560SL. I was wondering do the bearings have to be removed to install new rotors. Also what brand name rotors are OEM. How are zimmerman and Bolo rotors?

You do have to remove the bearings to install new front rotors. I don't think you need to for the rear rotors, but I haven't done those yet.
Don't know the answer to your other questions.

I did not have to remove the bearings for this job. They were contained under the cap and the job was a breeze.

Are Kleen Wheels those plastic disks? Do they cause problems or look bad?? I'd love to stop that dust.
