Convertible top 1990 300SL

My top goes down without any problems. When I raise the top, the pin on the driver's side at the back of the soft top will not latch automaticaly. I can latch it manually as described in the owner's manual. I tried using the search feature but didn't see anything addressing this. Can someone help me?

Bob

According to M.B. Doc...

"The front lock elements... is the cause of most hyrdaulic R129 soft top problems!" See This topic comes up alot on the SL forum>>>

The lock elements are inexpensive and easy to replace. You can do some basic troubleshooting which may confirm the front lock elements are the source of your trouble. I have the diagnostic manual for the convertible top system and can assist you if you like.

Bob,
Thanks for your response. Here's the strange part. In June I had both front soft top latches replaced as well as the rear bonnet micro switch. This was done in response to my top suddenly failing to latch. I'm wondering if this could be related or a separate problem. I'd appreciate any help from the diagnostic's manual you can provide. BTW, I paid $370.00 for each of the front top latches ( I couldn't get them at a discount as I was paying the repair shop price).

Just to clarify, the part numbers for what I described as front soft top latches were #129 800 08 74 and #129 800 07 74.

Begin by checking for codes

Reading stored codes is a logical starting point for diagnosing your problem. I recommend that you: (1) read all codes and write them down, (2) erase all codes you possibly can and write down any that will not erase, (3) try to work your top, then (4) if still no luck, read codes once again and report all your findings in a follow-up post.

The controller outputs a code by issuing a series of electrical pulses. You can view these pulses by watching the indicator lamp in the soft top switch blink. To ouptut a code of "12" for instance, the lamp would blink twelve times.

To trigger a code output, you short socket 10 of the diagnostic connector to socket 1 or any other convenient chassis ground for two to four seconds. While the short is connected the lamp should be on. The instant the short is removed the lamp will go out and after a brief delay will begin to slowly blink-out a code.

The diagnostic connector is located by the right front shock mount on the 2nd fire wall in the passenger compartment. It is rectangular and has a plastic cover.

A code of "1" indicates no faults and no hard top in place, while a code of "20" indicates no faults and the hard top is assumed to be on the car. Other codes identify a specific problem such as a limit switch. The codes that you find dictate what component of the system you troubleshoot next.

Repeat the read procedure until you have all of the codes. You implicitly know you have them when the sequence of codes begins to repeat.

You erase a code by reading it, waiting three seconds, and then shorting socket 10 to ground for six to eight seconds. With early versions of the soft top controller (up to v. 7.6) you must read a code twice before you can erase it. Naturally, this constraint is met if all of the codes are first read before any are erased.

I should mention that an LED may be wired between socket 10 and ground to read codes. It will blink out of phase with the lamp in the switch -- that is, when the lamp is on the LED is off.

Suspended Soft Top operation 300SL

Bobterry99,

I was very pleased to find and read your information on reading codes. I could not find the referenced connector in my 1991 300SL.

I have found a reference to an MB service advisory to dealers on July 1993 telling dealers to check and erase DTC codes before sending Soft top control units back under warranty, as well tech service bulletin indicating that a rapid "on" and "off" opreation of the ignition switch could cause th etop to not operate.

The codes that will suspend operation of a soft top on the R129 are 21, 22, 26, and 30. MB suggested the following procedure before a dealer was to return unit:

1. Recall DTC memory
2. Erase DTC memory
3. Drive vevhile for more than 10 seconds
4. Open and close top
5. Recal DTC memory again

The codes can be erased, the top will operate.

The ignition switch codes are 3 or 49. MB advises to erase codes.

So if I can recall and erase the codes I may get my top operating again.

Thanks Bob,

I removed every cover in the area but that one when I was looking for the connector.

I just pulled codes 17,20,29, & 30 from my 1991 300SL could someone chime in and decode for me.

17 = Left window failed to lower (limit switch in bottom of door not closed)
20 = Hard top installed
29 = Missing vehicle speed signal from ABS controller
30 = Top operation disabled (due to #29).

What to do next? You should erase all of the codes (search the archives on my username if you need to) and see which ones return to see what problems in the system are currently active. And in any further reply describe the problem you are trying to troubleshoot.
