ABS Lamp
83' Euro 500sl.
I've searched on ABS but not located quite these symptoms. When I depress the brake pedal firmly the ABS light comes on, I can apply less pressure to the pedal and the light will flicker. If I do this same test with the car not running but the key on the ABS light still comes on but it is either on or off no flicker. I would think this rules out the sensor, correct? A short maybe? How would I diagnose. I have the Service CD, doesn't say much about ABS but, then again it doesn't reference the euro cars. I wasn't even sure this car had ABS, if so it must be rear only because I have locked up the front wheels before. I've never felt a pulse in the pedal. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Marc

I have an 83 euro too. My problem was slightly different but may relate. My ABS light just stayed on, no flicker. My mechanic immediately went to the fuse panel (under the dash on the passenger side), pulled out the ABS relay and shook it. When it rattled, he said that means it's kaput. He replaced it and the light went off. The relay is not in your direct line of sight when you remove the fuse panel cover. It's an inch or 2 above the panel, so you have to get down low and look up in there. I'd say it's 3/4 x 3/4 x 1 1/2." Cost about $75, I think.

Symptoms sound exactly like what happens with the pad wear warning light as the brake pads approach the end of their life. Are you absolutely sure it's the ABS light?
