Fastest I have ever been in a car - My Car - was 220kph (135 MPH).
This was in my 1992 500SL. Felt OK, but boy was I nervous, and you should have seen my passenger!!

FYI, the fastest I have ever been on the ground is 180 mph.
But that was in my other drive.....

125 MPH

I ran my SL up to 135 mph and it was smooth, quiet and pulling hard. I guess I am over the hill because I took my 911s to 150MPH regularly, and my Ducati 996 was clocked at 134 at Elkhart Lake on the main straight. It isn't really all that fun to speed in the SL, considering the risk and lack of sound and feel. (But a track day is good fun in the SL, she just doesn't like the corners much.)

Had my '88 560SL out on the track at KY Speedway back in November. Since I was #4 in a 5 car group going around the track, I couldn't get going very fast. Only about 100mph. Car could have gone faster with clear track, but only maybe 110 or so. 1.5 mile tri-oval means turning too much for that car. Turning the wheel hard enough to make the front tires cry at 85 mph is an unsettling experience. Quite a bit different than going pretty much straight for miles on interstate highways at speed. Will try again next year with some new sub-frame bushings and much better tires. I am developing SOOO much respect for the guys that get out on this track and turn laps at averages over 170mph...and pass people!

I don't know; the speedo only goes up to 85!! I didn't go much faster than that, though. With an older car, (and even with new ones) you are really putting a great deal of trust in people you don't know!!

Have had my 87 560sl at 120mph and could have gone faster. for me the real thrill is the take off excelleration, the 8 cyclinder grumble and the cornering. have hit some hairpin turns at 45mph that would be challenging in most cars at 30mph.

i agree with the fact that these cars can be a handfull at higher speeds if the g-forces are to the outside. my steering box could probably use to be replaced so i know that having the a little loss of control should be corrected quickly in these cars.

the thing is that all cars will go fast. my 300turbo diesle when realitively new would do 125mph and still have more to offer. Top speed is no challenge. its all about how it gets there i.e. how fast, how fun and who is trying to keep up with you. I love smoking these ratty little rice burners with their loud tail pipes and reversed baseball capped drivers, and doing it while tuning the radio or otherwise distracted as not show even a modicum of interest.
