Was there really a factory chrome package?

Hi SL enthusiasts,
I am looking at a 1986 560 SL and it has the chrome wheel well accents and chrome wheels. The dealer (used car lot) says that mercedes offered a chrome package back then...I don't believe him. The chrome around the wheel wells is attached with little set screws under the lip and has a body colored molding that touches the car. The sides of the molding go down to the lower body section where the little "waves" appear and match them perfectly. I'm not a fan of these add ons but the price on this is fairly reasonable considering the mileage and overall condition. I would like to own one and am NOT willing to pay the $24,000+ they are demanding. I hate that you can buy a 1990 + SL for what they are asking for 86-89 SLs..but I love the classic R107 body.

Thanks for your input!!

Mercedes did not offer a chrome package. It's basically illegal to chrome wheels in Germany. The chroming process weakens them. The fender trim is aftermarket. If it is attached with screws there's a good chance it is, or will rust.
If you would find any rust, or lack of a detailed service history, you may want to pass. There are plenty more out there.
I just counted 39 560SL's for sale in the current issue of The SL Market Letter. web address is MBseek.com ph.# 612 377 0155

In the late 80's chrome wheels were an option but the fender chrome was most likely a dealer add on or after market. $24,000 is waaaay to much for an 86 560SL unless it has less than 60K miles and is in show room condition. You can find nice ones all day for $16K to $18K and sometimes as low as $14K.

My C36 came from the factory with optional chrome AMG rims so chrome rims are available time to time.

Question Optional Chrome?

I've never seen a MB brochure with chrome as an optional package.

I've spoken to three different parts people that have worked for MB dealers since the 70's and they all say that there never was a chrome option. It was all dealer add-on.
