How to tell if it's an AMG 500 SL?

Greetings,

I was wondering just how do you tell a car is an AMG? I know you can get spoiler AMG kits, but is there some "official" way to know for sure?

Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

What do you mean AMG?

AMG used to be an aftermarket tuner that enhanced Mercedes vehicles. They did a lot of racing and performance modifications but most of the ones that came to the US were suspension and cosmetics. They have AMG spoilers and skirts (the spoiler was standard on the 500s). You can look at the springs and shocks as they have AMG part numbers on them. I replace my shocks with Bilsteins so it won't show anymore. The AMG shocks are unavailable. With the AMG motor, you would see it under the hood. You should be glad it's not a full AMG because the parts are not available anymore.

I would be surprised if parts are no longer available, considering MB took control of AMG many years ago.

Surprise, surprise.

I am sure the new AMG stuff will be available but anything prior to the buyout is up for grabs. The guys at the Classic Center said they may be able to contact some of the old guys at AMG Germany but Mercedes Benz in America takes no responsibility. Example: The shocks are not available (with the AMG part number) and I had to buy any commercially available shock. The guy at Bilstein said "we have one shock for your car". I run HD's but it is still a lot softer than the originals.

AMG lives

AMG is certainly still alive. For the 129 SL, the only "real" one is the SL60, as far as I know. Among other things, it has AMG clearly written on the larger engine. (5956 cc V8, 381 HP), weighs a bit less than the SL500. I seem to remember an SL55, but perhaps that is just the new model.
