Dan,
I had the same problem with my 1990 300 SL. I let the dealer do the job. The charge for the insulation was $81.90 ( I think Fastlane has it for $53.00). Two glue trim cements were $15.90 and one hour's labor was $69.50, bringing the total cost to $167.30. Your cost to do it yourself should be about half of this. Did you try the search feature? I think I remember seeing something on this before. Bob

Bob,
Thank you for the reply. I did try the search feature but did not find anything. I will try again. Best regards, Dan |

That's a pretty easy job, and they're less than 50 bucks over the net.
Before you apply the mastic, do a dry run so you can see how far it needs to be tucked in at the front, how the sides and back need to line up, etc. You'll need maybe a dozen sticks of various lengths to prop it up (I happened to have a bunch if 1 x 2's lying around). Mark exactly where you want it to fit at the front. You don't need mastic where it tucks in. When you get the mastic on, start by positioning the front exactly, and everythig else will go where it's supposed to. Just leave it propped up with the sticks for a few hours to dry. The more sticks, the better, because it'll try to droop down. |

P.S., I just looked at the BenzBin instructions, and it looks like they're suggesting spray contact cement. In my opinion, that would make it 50 times harder. You need to be able to make small adjustments as you go. I used a large tube of permatex, and it's been on there several years now.
