Question Wooden Shift knob

I purchased from eBay a wooden shift knob for my '86 560 SL. I'm having real problems removing the original one. I took everything apart where I can get to the shaft where I see a nut which I can't loosen. I tried 1 15mmm wrench and it slips off the same for a 16mm one. I tried a vise grip .. no good. How do I do this ? Help please...
Thanks
Larry

My father and I just replaced the old shifter knob on his 85 500sl this past weekend and did it without a hitch. We loosened up the nut and then unscrewed the old knob. I don't remember what size wrench it was but it wasn't an oddball size though. I wish I could be of more help.
