timing on 500sl

I am trying to set the correct timing for my 1984 500sl. The engine sticker says 16 degrees plus or minus three degrees at idle. Should this be set with the vacuum advance disconnected or not? With a warm engine at idle I get about a 15 degree advance from the vacuum advance alone. with a cold engine I get little to no advance. I would appreciate any help on this matter?
