88 sl steering wheel
Hi, my 88 560 is a great car, however I have one complaint with the interior. The steering wheel is ugly and huge. I would love to replace it with a Nardi wooden, spoke wheel in a smaller diameter. Do any of you know the problems with this installation. I do not mind losing the air bag. Anyone know if this is possible or is it something I have to live with . Thanks in advance, Rob

Aside from losing the airbag, which I think is a big minus for this idea, thought has to be given about the visibility of the instruments after a smaller diameter wheel is added.

Paul, thanks for the reply. You are correct about visibility of the gauges with a smaller wheel. I was hoping a wheel about 1 or 2 inches smaller might be a workable compromise. Another advantage would be easier getting in and out of the seat without rubbing the seat bolster. Rob

I have a nardi wheel, and I definatley have a problem with the gagues. You can't see the top part of the speedo (from 70ish to 90ish), you can't see the gas gague, and you can't see most of the tach. Other than that, it's a pretty cool adittion to the car!

4ndelit, You have the steering wheel that I like the best. What is the outside diameter of the wheel? I still have the question about adapting this wheel to an airbag steering column. I don't think your car came with the air bag. Thanks for the pictures, now I really want one. Rob

no... My car never came with an airbag, so that might be a challenge, but that just makes it more fun as for the diameter... I'll try to find that out today... I have a final at 1 but I'll check after!

Rob,
I know that you want a smaller diameter steering wheel but just in case you change your mind take a look at the following sight. www.eris-car.com They have really nice looking steering wheels for all year 107s. |
