Exclamation Terms clarification

Changing the rear end to a higher numeric ratio will not give the engine more "power." It will, however, increase the rate at which your 380SL can accelerate (e.g., 0-60mph).

This is because the rear end ratio multiplies the torque available from the engine to the rear wheels. Multiplying it by a larger number gives you more torque at the rear wheels, and this will be felt in the seat of your pants as better performance.

The downside (beyond the cost of the modification) is that you may lose top speed, but how often do you get to go over 100mph anyway?

Going from a 2.47:1 to a 3.07:1 ratio should increase acceleration by about 24% - the feeling should be about the same as increasing your hp from 155 (stock) to 192.

Noticeable? You bet. Worth it? You decide.

Also, does your transmission start in 1st or 2nd? 0-60mph performance is greatly enhanced by using 1st gear.
