hey guys, it's about that time again for me, and I need some help. For valentines day, I'm gonna fully detail my car, and change the oil (just so happens to be the right time). I need to know what the tool is called that loosens the drain plug. I know it's a hex-key type thing, but it's big, so nothing I have fits, and I need to buy one. I've done oil changes before, but that was in auto-tech in high school, and they had a full set of tools (3 cabinets). Any help is appreciated, as well as suggestions for detailing (isn't it sad to be single

Robert, there are two products, that you can buy in a kit, that I found great for detailing...Klass All-in-One and Klass Glaze. If you want a "real" wax, you can go to Pinnacle caruba, which I found to be expensive and not as good as the Klass Glaze. You can buy these at Classic Car Care...you'll find them on the web. Buy a few micro fiber applicators as well.

By the way, once you are married and have kids, spending an afternoon detailing will seem like "fun."

The drain plug on a 107 chassis V8 is a 12mm allen (hex).
If you have no tools, what may be the best to use would be a long 1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar and a 12mm allen socket.
There is a special tool sold by MB and others, but you could use the 1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar for other types of jobs than just changing your engine oil or differential oil.

thanks a lot, this really helps! Richard, as far as the wax, I think I might stay with zainoz, as they have the best results I have ever seen (as compared to zymol and griots garage). I'll take some pics when I'm done!

Has anybody had experience using a oil aspiration set up, so you don't have to crawl underneath vehicles to drain the oil. Would like to get one, mechanical or electrical?

I use the Topsider MVP and suck the oil out through the dipstick. Unfortunately, I still have to get under the car to change the filter. The Topsider is a hand operated vacuum pump. Do a search in the Tech Forum for a gazillion threads on the topic.

BTW, the Service CD indicates that the 380 & 560 engines use a 14mm allen hex drain plug. Is it different for the 450? The Maintenance Manual calls for tool 117 589 02 07 00, which is a combination 13mm box end wrench and 14mm hex bit.

The Maintenance Manual also recommends sucking the oil out through the dipstick. Just make sure it's warm, not hot.

My 450 takes the 14mm hex. I'm pretty sure that this the case for all the 107s, I think Gilly just made a typo. I ended up getting a set of allen wrenchs from Harbor Freight. The 14mm also was perfect for changing the differential fluid.
