Question '86 SL Front End Rebuild

Seeking Info,

I have an estimate for what I would characterize as a front end rebuild. Involves dropping sub-frame and replacing all bushings associated with suspension and steering parts, replacing ball joints, tie rod ends and wheel bearings. The parts are relatively inexpensive (@ $350) but the estimate is $1700 which would put the shop hours at 18 or so which seems high to me. Does anyone know the book hours or better yet, the hours a good technician might take to do this sort of job?

If I go through with this and am satisfied, the back end will be next. Similar approach; drop the subframe, replace all flex parts, rear wheel bearings and rear shocks. Anyone have an idea on cost and hours - again, the parts seem inexpensive.

Any comments welcome. Thanks.

Mike in Ft. Worth
