Price of early 80's 500sl?

Hello,

I am not too familiar with the early 80's 500sl's and have an opportunity to purchase a 1983 500sl. It is in good condition for the year with average miles. What is a fair price assuming there are no major problems? Thanks.

As the owner of two of these "grey market" cars, I have to say that I've NEVER encountered a dealership that has refused to work or either. Nor have I ever found getting parts to be a problem. I brought the 300D in myself, and bought the 500SL a little over a year ago in Houston.

The 300D is especially easy to maintain as it is all manual. There's not one piece of "electric" on it, including the climate control system.

My only complaint with the SL is that documentation for that particular model is difficult/impossoble to find because none of them were manufactured in the USA. However, by using info available for other models for the engine and chassis, I've not found anything too difficult to overcome.

As to price, that's largely in the eyes of the buyer. I don't know what kind of mileage the car is showing, but at 90-110,000 miles you can probably expect to spend $3-5,000 bucks on repairs. Stuff wears out, but we humans do, too.

Cheers!

Very true that collectorcartraderonline.com has tons of SL's, but usually only two or three 107 500's at a time. I was surfing for a couple of months before I wound up buying a 560SL. I seem to recall asking prices usually in the 9K-11K range. Roy Spencer at oursl.com had one that sold in December; the link is still available at http://www.xk-sl.com/sys-tmpl/19731989350sl450sl380sl560sl/view.nhtml?profile=19731989350sl450sl380sl560sl&UID=73

Good luck with the quest--it can be an interesting car!

The interesting thing about the collectorcar site is that you can follow how long the car has been for sale. I started looking for my 450 slc about a year ago. There still are cars on the site that were there then. This means that the sellers are probably open for negociation. I think they renew the ad every month or so and if you print out the site pages you can follow them very easily over the months.
