New 560SL owner

Hello all.....
Just bought a 1988 560SL last week.
With 80,000 miles on it.
I'm planning on a few long road trips.
I had the car inspected before the purchase and it checked out O.K. The mechanic suggested a "pre-emptive" timing chain job.
Should I replace the timing chain, rails and tensioner or wait till 100,000 miles. How much should a job like that cost? I've been quoted $900.00 to $1,300.00.

The soft top hasn't been up in 5 years. Upon inspection the cloth is fine but the windows are yellowing. Any fix for the yellowing?

Thanks for your help
Ken

Thanks for all the advice. I'll schedule the timing chain replacement next month.
I took off the hard top (what are those little "O" rings called that fell out in pieces when I took the top off?) And worked on cleaning the rear window. It's looking better.
Took my first road trip with the top off. Went from Phoenix to the top of Mt. Lemon near Tucson. It drove great and got 14mpg on the trip. When I got home I noticed a ticking noise under the car before I turned it off. It appears to be the fuel pump. I search in the shop forum and I guess it's normal. I'll have it checked out when I get the timing chain done.
I bought my camera but forgot to use it.....
I'll post pictures soon.

Ken

Ken,

Conratulations on your purchase. May you enjoy your car as much as I have mine. As far as the timing chain issue, probably not a bad idea for peace of mind if money is no problem.

If you can post some pictures.

Replace the CHAIN, TENSIONER, TENSIONER LEVER, 3 UPPER RAILS and V/C GASKETS.

$900.00 should DO IT ALL . . .

re:yellowiwng plastic window on soft top

after long term non use, most windows discolor. Usually moisture. Air out or take blow dryer on low heat and will dry and clear up. Available cleaners just for plastic windows, (2 parts) avaiable from JC Whitney at nomnal cost. Good luck, Abe G
